Dr. Mark Stoutenberg, Exercise is Medicine Program Director of the American College of Sports Medicine visited the UP College of Human Kinetics last Sept.1, 2014, just a few days after he came to observe the first certification course of the Exercise is Medicine Philippines.  The UPCHK, which aims to be at the forefront in promoting the EIM advocacy, was pleased to host the renowned guest as he openly shared EIM related research opportunities and introduced Exercise is Medicine® on Campus (EIM OC).

Exercise is Medicine® on Campus calls upon universities and colleges to become engaged in the promotion of physical activity as a vital sign of health; the EIM Solution.  The EIM Solution aims to link the clinical to the community in combatting today’s most common chronic conditions through physical activity.  The university/college setting is seen as the microcosm that can help bring both together in accomplishing this goal.

Aside from involving faculty members from the CHK, fitness professionals and health service providers of the University of the Philippines, students are also targeted to be leaders in this initiative. They can serve as advocates and play an important role in the future success of EIM by becoming role models to people around them and promoting physical activity to others. They may also be trained to serve as future health care and health fitness professionals participating in EIM.

The UPCHK would like to share the concept of Exercise is Medicine® on Campus in the upcoming 3rd National Conference on Sport Pedagogy, as one of the workshops being offered.  This will serve as a great opportunity to present the EIM advocacy to the different regions of the country.

CHK welcomes academic year with four new projects

Ylanan Hall, Quezon City – The College of Human Kinetics under the leadership of Prof. Ronualdo Dizer is pleased to announce the completion of 4 new projects. These include the installation of new wood flooring and refurbishing of the U.P. Gym courts, construction of the Philippines’ first campus-based adventure course, creation of satellite weights room and building of a modern dining hub.

CHK is the country’s leading provider of advanced instruction and research on sports, recreation and physical education. With the volume of PE classes that will be affected by constructions, the Dean saw the long summer and mid-semester breaks as good opportunities to simultaneously put up these 4 projects.

Gym Flooring

With a Php 4.5M budget, the gym’s Court 1(farthest court from main entrance) now has a brand new mirante wood flooring, padded with leather and plastic to prevent moisture entry. Alongside, Courts 2 (center basketball court) & 3 (2 adjacent volleyball courts) underwent refurbishing, which involved sanding, painting and application of polyurethane for a lustrous look.  A top view will give a good glimpse of the first-ever installation of a CHK logo and a UP logo in the courts.

Consequently, gym users will have to follow stricter regulations that are now being enforced by the college for gym maintenance and security. These include wearing of rubber shoes and a UP ID with lanyard, among others.

Satellite Weights Room

With a CHK budget amounting to almost a million, the former fencing area has now been converted to a new satellite weights room for exclusive use of UP’s varsity teams and CHK orgs and majors. Meanwhile, regular PE students taking up weight training classes at the old weights room can also enjoy its furbished walls and floors.

Modern Dining Hub

After 25 long years of waiting for approval, CHK finally realizes the dream of having its own dining hub. With a soft opening on 26 August, varsity players, PE students and teachers will now have convenient access to a modern and ventilated dining place.  Materey, a canteen operator for major schools in Metro Manila, will manage its operation. “Strong conviction, kind support from administration and efficient coordination with the Business Concessionaires Office under Dr. Florendo is what gave birth to our dream,” said Dean Dizer.

Aerial Adventure Course

Tire Trail: one of the exciting activities in the adventure course
With a P1.7 million budget from UP, CHK becomes home to a modern outdoor activity area. Formally turned over on 22 August, CHK is now at par with leading outdoor recreation providers in the country.

Located right beside the earlier constructed adventure course, the entire frontage of the gym is continuously redesigned to cater to fast emerging outdoor trends. Going through the adjacent recently installed bike trail which circumvents the entire premises of the college will give a good view of the activity course.

Besides its use as an outdoor PE class adventure, it will also be open to the whole UP community, alumni and even private companies for a fee.

These are only 4 of the finished projects. A lot more are undergoing construction, bidding and seeking budget provisions. For inquiries on the use of facilities and ways to help, CHK may be reached through telefax 929-6033. ###
